4.1 PAPER I In order to obtain a deeper insight into the role of ER in mouse prostatic epithelium, we tried to characterize its involvement in the three major growth regulatory processes: proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. It turned out that the lack of ER does not only cause an increase in proliferation rate, as was shown before, but also suppresses apoptosis and alters differentiation of prostatic epithelium. ER and wt littermate male mice were injected with bromdeoxyuridine BrdU ; and sacrificed after 48 hours. We began by testing the reported proliferation suppression by ER and observed that in the absence of ER, the number of cell nuclei which incorporated BrdU was almost 3.5 fold higher in ER mice than in wt littermates. Next we used the TUNEL assay to study apoptosis. We saw that apoptosis is markedly suppressed in ER- VPs, and that antiapoptotic protein bcl-2 is upregulated. In fact, bcl-2 is known to be an estrogen regulated protein, so it was natural to speculate that it is regulated by ER in mouse ventral prostate. The most fascinating finding though came when we stained VP sections for p63 a known marker for the basal epithelial cells. Not only was the number of positive cells increased, but the position of p63-expressing cells was also affected. We found p63 positive cells in the luminal compartment of VP epithelium Fig 4.

11: 48AM NF.00002 Capillary self-assembly of floating bodies , SUNGHWAN JUNG, PAUL THOMPSON, JOHN BUSH, Department of Mathematics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology -- We study the self-assembly of bodies supported on the water surface by surface tension. Attractive and repulsive capillary forces exist between menisci of, respectively, the same and opposite signs. In nature, floating objects e.g. mosquito larvae ; thus interact through capillary forces to form coherent packings on the water surface. We here present the results of an experimental investigation of such capillary pattern formation. Thin elliptical metal sheets were designed to have variable shape, flexibility and mass distribution. On the water surface, mono-, bi-, or tri-polar menisci could thus be achieved. The influence of the form of the menisci on the packings arising from the interaction of multiple floaters is explored. Biological applications are discussed and actimmune.

The most extensively investigated dual ACE NEP inhibitor is omapatrilat, also known as BMS-186716. Omapatrilat is an effective hypotensive agent in experimental hypertension and was shown to be more effective than the ACE inhibitor fosinopril in reducing blood pressure and improving hemodynamics.60, 61 Omapatrilat also has beneficial hemodynamic and renal effects in experimental heart failure, 62, 63 and is reported to be equivalent to, or superior to, ACE inhibition.62, 64 66 However, failure to perform dose-response studies creates uncertainty whether the apparent superiority was owing to the doses of omapatrilat and ACE inhibitor chosen for study. One approach to investigation of the relative contribution of ACE and NEP inhibition to the effects of dual ACE NEP inhibition was to administer a natriuretic peptide receptor antagonist. In a study of anesthetized dogs with pacinginduced heart failure, the natriuretic peptide receptor antagonist HS-142-1 attenuated the increase in urine sodium and cyclic GMP excretion, glomerular filtration rate GFR ; , and plasma renin and cyclic GMP level, thereby demonstrating a contribution of natriuretic peptides to the changes in renin, cyclic GMP, GFR, and urine sodium caused by dual ACE NEP inhibition.64 and adalimumab.
