A survey was initiated with the intent of determining the availability of the ABC drugs, specialized MS providers, therapists, and clinics, and the interface with the larger MS community. Survey results were used to determine current MS care within the VHA and for the Clinical Care Committee to set priorities for improving MS care within VA. Surveys were sent to 84 VA members of the CMSC and VA attendees at previous CMSC meetings. The survey asked questions regarding availability of ABC drugs and dedicated MS services including rehab, SCI, inpatient and clinics. The survey also asked for numbers of MS patients seen, as the committee felt that the available work load statistics missed patients. The interface with MS services and meetings outside VHA was also surveyed. By June of 2000, 25 surveys were returned. Eight of those responding saw more than 80 patients per year. The remainder were seeing at least 40 patients. Twelve sites had dedicated MS clinics; twenty had dedicated MS providers. Seventeen had dedicated MS therapists available in their current clinic structures. The ABC drugs were available to all appropriate patients at all sites except one and that site referred appropriate patients to a larger facility. At the time of the survey there were 510 patients on ABC treatment at sites reporting numbers. Not all sites surveyed had numbers available for those on treatment. The number of sites providing specialized MS care and current therapies at the time of this survey was encouraging for VHA MS care.
