Medications, foods, and disease states can potentiate or inhibit the effects of warfarin Table 11, 10 ; . Some of these interactions, such as those observed with metronidazole Flagyl ; and trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole Bactrim, Septra ; , occur via inhibition of warfarin metabolism. Amiodarone Cordarone ; potentiates the effects of warfarin and, because of the long half-life i.e., 61 days ; of its active metabolite, requires close monitoring of INR whenever this agent is added to or deleted from a warfarin regimen. Other interactions, such as those observed with barbiturates, carbamazepine Tegretol ; , and rifampin Rifadin ; , occur when warfarin's hepatic metabolism is induced, resulting in less free, active warfarin and potentially increasing the required dosage. Alternatively, thyroid replacement medications such as levothyroxine may increase the metabolism of coagulation factors, reducing the amount of warfarin required.1 The interaction observed with salicylates and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is that of increased warfarinassociated bleeding via their inhibition of platelet activity and contribution to gastric erosion. Most foods that affect the anticoagulant effect of warfarin are high in vitamin K. It is important that patients know they do not need to avoid these foods; rather, they may eat them in moderation, avoiding large fluctuations in intake that will lead to marked variation in INR results. Out the assay at 37C instead of at room temperature, 2224C ; consistently reduced basal halide permeability in most cell types and is the preferred temperature to mimic in vivo cell physiology. To perform CFTR functional assays in a commercial plate reader, we generated stably transfected cell lines expressing wild-type or mutant CFTR together with YFP-H148Q. Cells were plated in black-wall, clearbottom 96-well microplates. The volumes, rates, and hardware for solution additions were optimized to eliminate artifactual fluorescence signals during continuous recordings from individual wells. Utilizing two software-controlled syringe pumps, the assay involved addition of an I -containing solution to generate a 100 mM inwardly directed I gradient, followed by addition of forskolin without changing the extracellular I concentration. Figure 4A left ; shows the response to forskolin 5 M ; in CHO, 3T3, and FRT cells stably expressing wild-type CFTR. The fluorescence signal consisted of an initial slow decrease due to basal I permeability followed by a more rapid decrease in fluorescence resulting from CFTR activation. As expected, only slow halide transport was seen in CFTR null cells even after forskolin addition. Figure 4A right ; gives a representative fluorescence micrograph of the plated cells showing bright and uniform cell-tocell fluorescence. High-magnification confocal microscopy showed a fairly uniform intracellular distribution.

Measuring likeness between data in different ways is an important part of pattern recognition and, over the years, many such measures have been developed. This paper proposes an asymmetric measure of likeness based on the concept of "context dependent divergence". This is used to construct a numerical descriptor for images and, in conjunction with fuzzy sets, to develop a supervised learning algorithm. When applied to the problem of handwritten digit recognition, the algorithm produces promising, highly accurate results.

Mollie Kathleen Gortner discovered an outcrop of quartz containing wire gold in 1891, filed a gold claim in her own name and, with her husband and son, hand steeled the mine's initial 250-foot deep mine shaft. The mine operated almost continuously until 1961, when it closed as a result of the closure of the Carlton Mill. This is the only mine tour that takes visitors down a 1, 000-foot vertical mine shaft, via a manskip elevator. System of printing draft books of abstracts before the meeting, which were corrected by meetings through comments and a vote at the completion of each presentation. John seemed pretty keen on the system, which although it needed a dedicated editor, involved audiences in a way we do not see today. John's belief that the Society's meetings were as much a social event as a scientific event also led to his practice of driving or catching the train to meetings. This habit ensured that meetings became part of a very much larger experience, in which the students often heavily subsidised by John ; and colleagues who accompanied him were exposed to a wide range of culinary and tourist experiences in a wonderfully hospitable atmosphere. The previously mentioned Adelaide meeting, for example, included not only a tour of the Barossa and Clare Valley wine districts in which John acted as the expert guide. It also included one of John's more exuberant 'extracurricular' contributions to the Society. This was a latenight induction for friends and colleagues to the game of 'slosh' on the precious billiard tables of one of Adelaide University's Residential Colleges. As many of the participants had become thoroughly sloshed during the course of the game it was not altogether surprising that, in the interests of preserving good order in respectable Adelaide, the entire group was unceremoniously asked to vacate the billiard room and not return. Members who were introduced to slosh by John will not be surprised to learn that a game some years later in the august Australian Club in Sydney resulted in one of his former students, Chris Martin, breaking a cue. John, who had recently been elected to the club, was left with a rather delicate and taxing exercise in diplomacy which led to his "donation" of the cue which bears his name in the club's billiard room. John also contributed to the development of physiology, both in Australia and overseas through the many conferences that he organised. These included several major international symposia at Leura, and at a luxury hotel close to his beloved property at Bowral, as well the Satellite Symposium of the 1983 IUPS meeting held in the spartan conditions of the University of Sydney's Veterinary School at Camden. Finally, he exerted an influence which, despite being difficult to document, had a major positive impact on Physiology in Australia. Through his service in the Society and on innumerable appointment committees and review boards, he came in contact with every professional physiologist in the country as well as many students. Many of the letters which I, and others, have received since his death have mentioned the profound impact that contact with John had in assisting these people to become more productive and happier scientists. He succeeded in fostering a collegial striving for excellence among Australian physiologists which contributed greatly to the success of the discipline. Acknowledgements I would like to thank John's many colleagues and former and rifadin.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis is a life-threatening exfoliative condition, usually the result of a severe drug reaction involving the apoptotic loss of the epidermis.6 Many drugs have been implicated in the pathogenesis of TEN.1 In a large case-controlled study, the drugs most commonly associated with TEN were found to be sulfonamides, anticonvulsant agents, allopurinol, and oxicam nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.1, 3 There is also substantial association with antibiotics such as cephalospor REPRINTED ; ARCH DERMATOL VOL 139, JAN 2003 41 and robaxin.
Vasculature, CNP induces vasodilatation, albeit to a far lesser extent than that induced by ANP Lopez et al., 1997; Wei et al., 1994 ; . Physiological functions suggested for CNP are the regulation of vascular tone and modulation of vascular regeneration Komatsu et al., 1996; Yamahara et al., 2003 ; among others. CNP has also been shown to inhibit the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells in culture Furuya et al., 1991; Hutchinson et al., 1997 ; and to prevent balloon injury-induced coronary artery restenosis in animal models Brown et al., 1997; Shinomiya et al., 1994; Ueno et al., 1997 ; . A role for CNP beyond the cardiovascular system became apparent when targeted disruption in mice of either the CNP gene or the NPR-B gene produced a phenotype of severe dwarfism Chusho et al., 2001 ; . This observation indicates that CNP has a regulatory function in the bone, where it stimulates chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation in growth plate and rifapentine.
